Definition:

A potential cause of male infertility, retrograde ejaculation is when semen enters the bladder during orgasm, instead of leaving the body via the urethra.

Retrograde ejaculation may be caused by previous surgery, diabetes, and some medications.

Treatment may include discontinuing a medication that’s causing the problem, or in the case of diabetes or previous surgery, it may be treated with epinephrine-like drugs.

In the treatment of infertility caused by retrograde ejaculation, semen may be retrieved from the bladder and then used to fertilize an egg as a part of IVF treatment.
