Father's Day and the Fertility Challenged

By , About.com GuideJune 14, 2011

Follow me on:

Father's Day is this Sunday, June 19th. For the fertility challenged, Father's Day can act as another reminder of what they want but have not been able to achieve - fatherhood.

My impression, though I could be wrong, is that Father's Day is not as difficult of a day for men, as Mother's Day is for women. Maybe it's a gender difference, or maybe it's because Father's Day is not as strongly advertised. For Mother's Day, it seems like every restaurant and product is offering something special for moms. For Father's Day, the marketing is lower key. (Maybe men just aren't as interested in Hallmark holidays.)

But just because Father's Day isn't a big deal for many men, don't think that means men care less about infertility than women, especially when male factor infertility is an issue.

Men and women cope with infertility differently. Sometimes, for women, it can feel as if male partners don't care as much as they do, and this can lead to tension in the relationship.

The truth is that men do care. They just express that hurt differently.

How about you? Is Father's Day difficult for you? How does it compare to Mother's Day? How do you cope as a couple? Please leave your thoughts in the comments!
